For novice athletes or people who are just starting (or restarting) strength training — muscle recovery and muscle maintenance can have a greater effect. During periods of intensive training, (re)building or recovery — when muscle breakdown or muscle damage is increased. For older people or people at increased risk of muscle loss — HMB can contribute to maintaining muscle mass. Less useful — or with “modest” results — for already well-trained athletes who are already at a high level.
